Hey There!

I am greatly looking forward to connecting with you. Please read the "About Me" page, so you can learn more about me. I look forward to learning more about you. I firmly believe that:

  • you deserve to feel better,

  • emotions heal when they are witnessed and validated,

  • therapy should address the person as a whole - their mind, body, and spirit.

About Laura Mahony

Hello, I'm Laura Mahony. I'm a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor who resides in sunny Denver, Colorado. I work with clients ages 8 through adult for neurofeedback and teen through adult for mental health counseling. The demographic that I work with are individuals who have ongoing challenges; whether that is anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, learning disorders, autism, or experienced challenging obstacles in their childhood and/or formative years. My goal is to help you stop a feeling of idling,  due to symptoms of overwhelm, depression, irritability, fogginess, burnout, numbness, or living a life of fear. My role as a practitioner is to begin the process to initiate healing and transformation, further facilitating positive, powerful and life-long change.

My Journey to Becoming a Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapist

My own growth through personal life struggles is what helps me relate so deeply with my clientele.

My life experiences have brought me here to you. I have the capacity to hold space as you work through your challenges because of all I have experienced. These experiences are my biggest teachers and are the reason I have such great empathy. Anxiety was my teacher to love, not fear. Depression told me I was not on the right path in my life. Complex PTSD taught me about self-love, empowerment, and to ask for support when I need it. ADHD was my teacher of presence and gratitude. Divorce taught me the importance of ensuring my own joy first and then everything else falls into place. And through parenting, I learned to parent from belief in my kids, rather than from a place of fear that I am not enough.

I am now on the other side of these lessons and many others because of my thirst for knowledge, to become the best human possible, and to learn lessons of love in this lifetime. Neurofeedback was the secret sauce that finally allowed me to access all that my higher self knew to be true, but was not able to access. It is a transformative combination!

My life experiences are what lead me to become the Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapist I am today.

Helping People Recharges Me and Gives My Life Meaning

Being a Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapist is inspiring. I love seeing those I work with learn about themselves both physiologically and mentally, as well as have their own meaningful insights about their challenges.

This is what propels them forward to transform their lives beyond what they may have imagined. The most rewarding thing about being a Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapist is seeing a person walk away lighter, more free, and pumped about their life.

I am committed to you accomplishing your therapeutic goals and to help you live your best life.

I Have a Genuine Interest in Others and Bring Clarifying and Energizing Presence to Sessions

I have a natural ability to:

  • Explain mental health symptoms in an easy-to-understand way

  • Inspire hope for getting better

  • Accept people for who they are and in their current life circumstances

  • Help clients heal their past and manage the present

People who know me often say that I am a good listener who can help people feel heard and understood which helps people feel seen and start to heal.

Our Sessions Are Focused on You

It's important to me to provide a non-judgmental space where you can be yourself and ensure that the process is collaborative. At The Japanese Lantern, all sessions will provide you with the space to be yourself. There isn't a "one size fits all" approach to Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapy. Our sessions will fit your specific needs and concerns.

As a Neurofeedback and Mental Health Therapist, I Embrace the Following Philosophies:

  • I believe that you deserve to feel better.

  • I believe that emotions heal when they are witnessed and validated.

  • I believe that therapy should address the person as a whole - their mind, body, and spirit.

  • I believe that loving and accepting ourselves for who we are, scars and all, is one of the most courageous things we can do.

  • I believe that oftentimes it is a learned and dysregulated physiology that causes symptoms, and it’s not you or your cognition. You regulate the physiology, and the cognition falls into place with the ability to respond in alignment with who you truly are.

My Professional Background

I received a Master of Science at the University of Phoenix, graduating with honors. During this process, I served as an intern at South Metro Fire and Rescue, working as both a counselor and neurofeedback therapist, supporting these first responders. I am currently a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in the state of Colorado. I am now pursuing board certification in neurofeedback (BCN) and expect to have this completed within the year.
